What do I do if I am seeing a white screen, or a 500 error in the browser?

What is this error?

If you see:

  • A page displaying an error code 500, or

  • A completely blank white screen

This indicates that something has gone wrong on the server, but the exact cause isn’t shown because error reporting is disabled. The technical details are typically recorded in the server’s error logs.

Common causes

  • A server or hosting configuration issue
  • A recent WordPress core, plugin, or theme update

What to do

  1. First, please let us know immediately if you have done any of the following:
    1. Updating WordPress

    2. Updating plugins

    3. Updating the site’s theme

  2. Next, make a note of the following:
    1. The URL where the error occurs
    2. Your IP Address
    3. A screenshot of the error if possible
    4. Steps to reproduce the issue (e.g., does it happen on every page load, or only when saving?).
  3. Next, open a ticket with your hosting provider, provide them with the information you collected in step 1, and ask them to check for any server errors or modsecurity rules
  4. Finally, open a support ticket with BloomCU and provide us with the information you collected in step 1 and any additional information, such as log files, provided by your hosting provider.
